Sierra de Cabezas de Águila (SCI)
The PIO stands at over 875 metres above sea-level (nearby there is a peak that reaches over 930 metres). From here we can enjoy magnificent views and a diversity of landscapes and habitats. There are meadows, scrub with rocky outcrops of shale, and a variety of woodland (sweet chestnut, pine, oak etc). It is a good place to see birds of prey hunting. Continuing along the recommended path takes us into an excellent area for forest species. It is also a wonderful place in the spring for orchids.
2.- Orchid trail (see track). This is an area with a diversity of interesting orchids (Cephalantera longifolia, Neotinea maculata, Dactylorhiza insularis, Dactylorhiza sulphurea, Serapias lingua, etc) and we recommend walking at least 4 kilometres here. Take into account that flowering periods will be a few days later than in lower zones.
3.- The walk to the village (see track). This walk is a little more than 3.5 km and one could use it to reach the PIO without using one’s vehicle. It is a pleasant climb beside a river valley, an area of gardens, a small pine and an old quarry until one reaches the scrubby zone.
