PIO 12.- Sierra de Cabezas de Águila (SCI)

Sierra de Cabezas de Águila (SCI)

1

The PIO stands at over 875 metres above sea-level (nearby there is a peak that reaches over 930 metres). From here we can enjoy magnificent views and a diversity of landscapes and habitats. There are meadows, scrub with rocky outcrops of shale, and a variety of woodland (sweet chestnut, pine, oak etc). It is a good place to see birds of prey hunting. Continuing along the recommended path takes us into an excellent area for forest species. It is also a wonderful place in the spring for orchids.

Additional Information:

Location
This PIO is on the slopes of the Villuercas, within a SCI called “Sierra de Cabezas de Águila”, in the municipality of Garciaz.
Access
From Garciaz take the CC-129 in the direction of Berzocana. At kilometre point 3, leave on a track to the right that will reach at the suggested point after a distance of about 1000 metres.
Parking options
This is a good place to park. If the track is in poor condition, it is best to leave the vehicle at the start of the track, close to the Cross and ascend and enjoy this beautiful walk.
Recommended season
All year round.
Interesting species present
The scrub supports a great variety of small birds, especially warblers. The more open rocky areas support species like Black-eared Wheatear. It is a good area to see Golden Eagle, as well as Griffon and Black Vultures, Black and Red Kites etc. The surroundings (including along the recommended walks) provide chances to see other birds, such as Great and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Jay, Hawfinch etc.
Options for short walks in the vicinity
1.- We recommend taking the signposted hiking trail PR-CC 228 “Entre robles, sierras y castaños”.
2.- Orchid trail (see track). This is an area with a diversity of interesting orchids (Cephalantera longifolia, Neotinea maculata, Dactylorhiza insularis, Dactylorhiza sulphurea, Serapias lingua, etc) and we recommend walking at least 4 kilometres here. Take into account that flowering periods will be a few days later than in lower zones.
3.- The walk to the village (see track). This walk is a little more than 3.5 km and one could use it to reach the PIO without using one’s vehicle. It is a pleasant climb beside a river valley, an area of gardens, a small pine and an old quarry until one reaches the scrubby zone.
