PIO 13.- River Almonte I

River Almonte (River Almonte SCI)

This PIO combines two habitats and two protected areas (River Almonte and Monfragüe). On one hand the deep river valley is typical of the tributaries of the River Tagus through the plains of Trujillo-Cáceres and on the other there is the dehesa and Mediterranean scrub of its slopes. Here the valley is not as deep as elsewhere, but has nevertheless is very attractive scenically and is good for birds. Large raptors, above all vultures, passerines and water birds are an accompaniment to a walk in this beautiful spot.

Additional Information:

This PIO is at the River Almonte on the road between Trujillo and Monfragüe (EX-208).
1.- From Trujillo take the EX-208 in the direction to Monfragüe for about 24 km.
2.- From Aldea del Obispo take the CC-88 to the Ex208 and then in the direction of Monfragüe travel a further 13 km.
Parking options
It is an excellent spot for parking several vehicles, close to the bridge.
Recommended season
All year round.
Interesting species present
Probably the Crag Martin will welcome us as we arrive. The characteristics of the site indicate that there will be a mixture of different species here, such as many passerines associated with wet habitats as well of those of Mediterranean scrub. These valleys are also dotted with rocky outcrops so attractive species like Blue Rock Thrush are possible. The fly over of vultures is almost constant here, as well as other large and medium-sized raptors.
Options for short walks in the vicinity
At this site we suggest walking along the right bank downstream up to the so-called Almonte cataracts (it is about 3 km, there and back).
