PIO 15.- Dam of the Sierra Brava Reservoir (Zorita Plains and Sierra Brava Reservoir SPA)

Dam of the Sierra Brava Reservoir (Zorita Plains and Sierra Brava Reservoir SPA)

1

This is one of the most important sites for wintering birds in Extremadura. The dam was completed in 1996 and created a new water body of 1650 ha. The water for the reservoir comes from the Pizarroso stream, which subsequently joins the Ruecas River, a tributary of the Guadiana. The PIO is at the dam because from here there is a view across the water body and of the large numbers of wintering waterfowl, as well as a view south over the irrigated farm lands.

Additional Information:

Location
There are in fact two PIOs, One is at the dam itself and the other before the dam, entering from the EX-355.
Access
From Zorita we take the EX-355 and after about 12 km to take the left turn to the dam. From here, after barely 2.5 km we have reached the dam. Before that, at some 500 metres from the main road, we have the other PIO.
Parking options
At both points it is possible to park a vehicle without obstructing the road. The point closer to the road has ample space, including for a minivan.
Recommended season
Throughout the year, but especially autumn and winter.
Interesting species present
Water birds are especially well represented here. Waterfowl (Greylag Geese, Common Shelduck, Pintail, Wigeon, Shoveler…), Great Crested Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Common Crane, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Gull-billed Tern and many more will be here for us to enjoy at this artificial, yet very important site.

Options for short walks in the vicinity
We recommend a walk from the point closer to the main road (where there is a picnic area), along the bank for about 4 km there and back.
